Darkly atmospheric and lovely, Pretty Baby is a 1978 Louis Malle film starring a twelve year old Brooke Shields as a young girl in 1917 era New Orleans. It's definitely worth watching - if only to see the beautiful ribbons and soft lace and Edwardian dresses. White tights and matching shoes, sheer lace dresses with wide ribbons tied at the waist, straw hats, crochet collars, damask wallpaper in muted colors, oversized carpet bags, chambray sun dresses. All of my favorite things.
Don't be fooled, though.. it can be a difficult film to watch. It takes place during the final days of (legal) prostitution in the south. At its release in the 1970s, it raised all sorts of controversy over its portrayal of Brooke Shields as a child prostitute.. and for good reason. While it might not be considered as controversial today, I still had a hard time watching certain parts of the film.
