blithe spirit
Info Post
After a day on the lake, Neil and I are home again - resting up from spending the Fourth of July in celebratory boating and swimming fashion. Resting up from.. resting up. At one point during our trip, we jumped out of the boat to go lake swimming right over an old town, covered up by water during the construction of a dam in the 1950s (imagine a ghost town 61 feet under water.. wonder what's left of it now).
And a bit of a jump from Independence Day - these screenshots are from the British David Lean film Blithe Spirit, based on a Noel Coward play from 1945. The movie is pretty clever with a lighthearted take on death and the supernatural (which reminds me of Billy Wilder but not quite as funny), but the best part has got to be Elvira - the deceased first wife - and her fluorescent attire. Her lips and nails glow red but everything else about her is a vivid pale green. The hues in this film are lovely - pale coral, mint, lavender, rich royal blue. The house the main characters live in is filled with grand balustrades and built-in bookshelves and apparently all they do the whole day is drink coffee, smoke cigars, hold seances, and change into formal attire for supper. Doesn't sound so bad.
Another cool part of this film? The frequent use of the coffee siphon - it just makes the 1940s that much cooler. Neil bought one for his birthday last month and we're obsessed with it now.
More photos here. Happy Friday!
