Between 1939 and 1943, photographers from the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information traveled all over the U.S. to take pictures of rural and urban communities, intending to highlight the effects of the Depression on Americans. The results were these photos.
The pictures seem so refreshingly candid in our digital age of poses and retouching - photos of tenement buildings and the people who live there, small kids without shoes, families traveling into town for the day, state fairs, square dances, bayou fishing, crops, patriotism. The muted colors are wonderful and the faces - even the little children's faces - all look so worn and weathered. There's something very real and beautiful about them.
